Historical city centre
Frozen in medieval time, enclosed by high walls and boasting magnificent cliff drops over the sea, the historical village of Polignano has forever represented the history, culture and the soul of its local people.
The Marquise Arch welcomes its visitors, introducing them to the "piazza dell'orologio" (clock square) with its ancient sundial, where the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is located, preserving the memorabilia of Patron Saint Vito and the tomb of Stefano da Putignano, a national monument.
Small streets lead off from the piazza, paved with stone which has been smoothed over time, guiding visitors to one of the most fascinating panoramas offered by the Apulian coast, best admired from the numerous balconies looking over the enchanting light reflected sea, from the top of an empty 24 metre drop. The evocative evening atmosphere, the show of lights, summertime music concerts and the numerous night spots, all contribute to making the "old city" one of the most popular areas in Polignano.
Cave and see
There are approximately 40 sea caves, many of which can be accessed by boat, embellishing the coast of Polignano a Mare.
Amongst these, the "Ardito cave", for its rare beauty, the "Azzurrra", "delle Monache", "delle Colonne" and "dei Colombi" caves, as well as the characteristic "delle rondinelle" cave. "Grotta Palazzese", one of its kind, thanks to its unique and extraordinary beauty, has even earned a mention amongst the "seven landscape wonders of the world".
